History

Prior to incorporation in 1959, the present day City of North Lauderdale consisted of two main communities: "Hampton Park" and "Carol City." Carol City extended from the present day Kimberly Boulevard to NW 12 Court. Hampton Park began just west of 12 Court and through Hampton Boulevard to approximately the present day Newport Center. The area was primarily agricultural land farmed for tomatoes, beans, and other seasonal crops. Notable local farmers included Charles Priest and Max Graham. Mr. Graham bred and raised chickens and roosters. His roosters could be heard throughout the area - hence the Hampton Park resident's adoption of the Rooster as the "unofficial" neighborhood mascot. According to the City of North Lauderdale's historical records, the site was settled in 1878 by James Hampton who built a homestead on 320 acres of land. The area became known as "the Hampton settlement."

The history of North Lauderdale is closely tied to the development of the Florida East Coast Railway. James Hampton's son, John, sold a right-of-way through the family property to Henry Flagler in 1912. The railway spurred the agriculture industry in the area.
