Melbourne was founded in 1867 by former slaves known as the Black Creek settlers. The name Melbourne comes from its first postmaster, Cornthwaite John Hector, who named the town after his hometown of Melbourne, Australia. In the late 1800s, Melbourne became an important railroad junction between Jacksonville and Miami. The city experienced substantial growth throughout the 20th century.
