Margate is a city in Broward County, Florida, United States. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 61,202 residents, making it the 18th most populous city in Broward County. Located just northwest of Fort Lauderdale, Margate is part of the Miami metropolitan area.

History

Margate has an interesting history dating back to the late 1800s. The area was originally inhabited by the Tequesta Indians, but the first permanent European settlers arrived in the 1880s. One of the early settlers was David D. Dickey Jr who named the area Margate after the seaside resort in England [1]. Early residents made a living farming fruits, vegetables and sugarcane.

In 1955, Margate was officially incorporated as a city. Rapid development followed in the 1960s as more people moved to South Florida. Today, Margate is a well-established residential community with a vibrant business district.

The racial makeup of the city is 66.9% White, 25.5% Black or African American, 0.2% Native American, 2.7% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 2.6% from other races, and 2% from two or more races. 22.8% of the population is Hispanic or Latino. The median age in Margate is 41 years old. 22.9% of residents are under age 18 while 18.3% are age 65 or older. There are 25,245 households with an average of 2.31 people per household.
