History

The area now known as Kendall West was originally inhabited by Native American tribes like the Tequesta and Calusa. Early European settlers came to the area in the 1800s, establishing homesteads and farms. One of the first settlers was Henry Perrine, credited with introducing sisal, a plant used in rope production, to the Florida Keys in the 1830s.

In the early 1900s, real estate developers began buying up land in the Kendall area for residential neighborhoods as the population of Miami started to boom. After World War II, the pace of suburban development increased rapidly. Kendall West emerged as a distinct suburban community just southwest of the city of Kendall, which had been established in the 1920s.
