Kendale Lakes is a census-designated place (CDP) in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 56,148 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Kendale Lakes is located at 25°43′12′′N 80°21′24′′W (25.72, -80.357). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.6 square miles (22 km2), of which, 8.5 square miles (22 km2) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.26 km2) of it (0.93%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 58,612 people, 19,233 households, and 14,742 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 6,857.2 people per square mile (2,645.9/km2). There were 19,887 housing units at an average density of 2,328.5/sq mi (899.3/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 79.63% White (40% Non-Hispanic White,) 10.38% African American, 0.24% Native American, 2.07% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 4.10% from other races, and 3.52% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 54.35% of the population.

There were 19,233 households out of which 35.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.5% were married couples living together, 16.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.8% were non-families. 20.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.01 and the average family size was 3.47.

In the CDP, the population was spread out with 25.8% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 31.4% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 90.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.2 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $42,375, and the median income for a family was $46,658. Males had a median income of $31,416 versus $26,624 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $17,169. About 10.0% of families and 12.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.5% of those under age 18 and 19.2% of those age 65 or over.

History

Kendale Lakes started as a planned community built by the Mackle brothers in the 1960s. They envisioned a self-contained community with residential areas, shopping centers, medical facilities, office buildings and recreational amenities. The community grew rapidly, with young middle-class families attracted by the suburban lifestyle and affordable homes.
