History

The history of Greenacres dates back to the 19th century when the area was swampy wilderness. As described on the City of Greenacres website, the land that became Greenacres was purchased in 1885 by John S. Adams and John I. Weeks. They called their property Greenacres due to the green grasses surrounding the freshwater lakes in the area.

In 1911, Ledwith D. Fulton purchased over 5,000 acres of the Greenacres land. Fulton promoted the area to potential farmers and land buyers, selling off parcels through lottery drawings. Agriculture became an important early industry in Greenacres.

By 1925, the small community had a population of 350 residents along with a school, churches and businesses to serve the local farmers. On May 24, 1926 Greenacres was incorporated as a town. Over the next few decades, Greenacres remained a small agricultural hub.

Significant development started in Greenacres in the 1950s as the construction of I-95 brought more residents. Retirees were attracted to Greenacres' affordable land and sunny climate. Large housing subdivisions such as Kings Point, Valhalla and St. Juliens sprung up during this decade.

Continued population growth led Greenacres to reincorporate as a city in 1961. In the 1970s, the construction of the Palm Beach Mall solidified Greenacres' status as a major retail and entertainment destination in the county. The city's population boomed as new housing and businesses located in Greenacres.
