Fort Pierce is a city located on Florida's Treasure Coast in St. Lucie County. With a population of around 47,000 as of the 2020 census, it is the county seat and one of the larger cities in the region. The area was originally inhabited by the Ais Native American tribe prior to European settlement. The racial makeup of the city is approximately 40.5% White, 53.5% African American, 0.4% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, and 2.3% from two or more races. 19.8% of the population identifies as Hispanic or Latino of any race. Fort Pierce has grown steadily over the past few decades, with its population increasing 15.6% between 2000 and 2010.

History

Fort Pierce was established in 1838 when the United States Army built the Fort Pierce fort during the Second Seminole War. By 1842, the Army abandoned the fort and opened it up for settlement. The Fort Pierce Central Business District, located near the fort's former location, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1882, the Florida East Coast Railway opened up service to the area, allowing numerous settlers to move into the region. Pineapple and citrus crops became important to the local economy.

Fort Pierce was officially incorporated as a town in 1901 and as a city in 1921. The city grew significantly as tourism became an important industry in the area during the 1920s. During World War II, the United States Navy operated a training center in Fort Pierce, bringing even more growth to the city. Two hurricanes in the 1940s destroyed much of the waterfront area in Fort Pierce, but rebuilding efforts restored the city.

Economy

Historically, the economy of Fort Pierce was driven by agriculture, particularly citrus crops, pineapples, winter vegetables, and cattle ranching. While some of these activities continue today, the economy has diversified over the years. According to the Florida Legislature's Office of Economic and Demographic Research, the top employment sectors today in St. Lucie County include education, health care, retail, construction, professional services, and hospitality. Tourism also contributes significantly to the area's economy.
