History

Fort Myers was established in 1850 as a military fort to fend off Seminole Indians during the Seminole Wars. The fort was named after Col. Abraham Myers, who was in command of the garrison. After the wars ended, the fort was abandoned. In 1858, William Hendry brought his family to live on the abandoned site and became the first permanent settler. A small village grew up around the fort and was officially incorporated as Fort Myers in 1866.

The city grew slowly until the arrival of the railroad in 1904, which connected Fort Myers to points north and made it a gateway to southwest Florida. Thomas Edison built a winter home in Fort Myers in 1885, which contributed to the city's growth as a tourist destination. The Royal Palm Hotel opened in 1898, facilitating tourism. Growth accelerated into the 20th century with the development of the Edison Bridge, Tamiami Trail, and Page Field Airport.
