With a population of over 118,000 as of 2022, Clearwater is a mid-sized city located on Florida's Gulf Coast in Pinellas County. Known for its beautiful beaches, warm weather, and scenic views, Clearwater offers residents and visitors an inviting mix of recreation, culture, and economic opportunity.

History

The area now known as Clearwater was originally inhabited by the Tocobaga Native Americans. In 1842, the Armed Occupation Act was passed, granting 160 acres of land to anyone who would bear arms and cultivate the land for five years. This brought an influx of settlers to the area, which was then part of Hillsborough County. The first settlers farmed, fished, made salt from the ocean, and traded with Cuba.

In 1888, Clearwater was incorporated as a town. It became a popular destination for vacationers seeking warm winters and enjoyment along the coast. Tourism fueled much of the city's early growth and economy. In 1915, Pinellas County was formed and Clearwater became the county seat.

Over time, Clearwater developed into a more diversified economy and hub for healthcare, technology, finance, and services. Today, it continues building on its rich past while looking to the future as an attractive site for businesses and residents.
