Carrollwood is a census-designated place (CDP) in Hillsborough County, Florida, United States. The population was 33,365 at the 2010 census.[1] Carrollwood is a district of Tampa and home to several golf courses and parks.

Population

According to the 2010 census, there were 33,365 people living in Carrollwood. The racial makeup of Carrollwood was 78.0% White, 9.0% African American, 0.3% Native American, 6.9% Asian, 0.0% Pacific Islander, 3.3% from other races, and 2.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino people of any race were 15.7% of the population.[1]

Between 2000 and 2010, the population of Carrollwood grew at a rate of 17.6%. The median age was 38.7 years old. The gender ratio was fairly balanced with 49.5% female and 50.5% male.

History

The area was first settled in the 19th century by the Morrison family. George Morrison established a homestead in what is now the Carrollwood area in 1848 after relocating from Alabama. The Morrisons named their homestead Tin City for the tin roofed structures on the property. The family started one of the first citrus groves in the region.[2]

In the early 20th century, Tampa real estate developer A.L. Moore purchased land in the area and subdivided it into plots for new homes. The community was originally named Carrollwood Park after Moore's wife Carrie. Streets were laid out in a planned grid pattern.

After WWII, Carrollwood experienced rapid suburban growth as servicemen returned and the population boomed. Large tracts of citrus groves were converted into more suburban developments. The community saw another population surge in the 1970s and 1980s.[2]
