In the 1830s, Fort Brooke was established nearby, attracting settlers to the region. In the late 1800s, Henry Lee Brandon purchased land in the area and allowed the Seaboard Air Line Railway to go through his property on the condition a depot was built there. A settlement sprung up around the new depot, which was named Brandon in Henry Brandon's honor. The area remained a small rural farming community until the Florida real estate boom of the 1920s, when residential developments began appearing in Brandon. Major residential growth took place in the 1970s, transforming Brandon into a commuter suburb of Tampa. Brandon was officially incorporated in 1985.
