History of Bradenton

The area was originally inhabited by the Timucua people. In 1539, explorer Hernando De Soto landed near Bradenton and established a brief settlement. The modern city was founded in 1842 when Joseph Braden purchased 160 acres of land along the Manatee River, which would later bear his name as Bradentown. The city became a trade center for the local agricultural industry including citrus, vegetables, and cattle.
