History

Boynton Beach has its origins in the late 1800s when Nathan Boynton, a former Port Huron, Michigan resident, decided to establish a settlement along the Florida east coast. He bought 500 acres of land and in 1894 completed the Boynton Beach Hotel to serve guests who arrived by boat or came down from Lake Worth by a newly constructed jungle road.

The town of Boynton was incorporated in 1920 and reincorporated as the City of Boynton Beach in 1931. The city grew steadily over the decades, with periods of rapid growth in the 1950s and 1970s. Today it stretches over nearly 14 square miles from the Intracoastal Waterway to the Florida Turnpike.
