History

The name "Alafaya" comes from the Muscogee word "Alafai", meaning "new turkey creek." The area was originally inhabited by the Timucua people prior to Spanish colonization in the 16th century. The community saw growth and development in the 1950s and 1960s following the opening of the University of Central Florida nearby.
