Wilmington is the largest city in Delaware with a population of 70,635 as of the 2010 census. It is located in New Castle County in the northeastern part of Delaware along the Delaware River. History

Wilmington traces its roots back to 1638 when the area along the Christina River was settled by Swedes and Finns. It was originally called Fort Christina. In 1698, it was incorporated as a town under the name Wilmington after Spencer Compton, Earl of Wilmington. By the 1730s, Wilmington was an important trading center and port city. It would play a key role in the American Revolution as a supply center for George Washington's army.
