Newark, Delaware - Wikipedia

Newark is home to the University of Delaware. Newark received its charter from the colonial assembly in 1758, by which time the town had been laid out. Newark was founded by Scots-Irish and Welsh settlers who came to Delaware in the 17th century. Its central location along the main highway leading to the Chesapeake Bay proved very advantageous for trade, primarily in grain from area mills. Growth accelerated after the War of 1812, and major advances in transportation helped drive development.

History of Newark

The area around Newark was first settled around 1694 following the proclamation of William Penn that religious freedom and democracy would prosper in his colony. Newark was founded by Scotch-Irish and Welsh settlers from nearby Pennsylvania. The town was originally known as "New Ark" or "New Work".

One of the earliest known maps of the Newark area was created by surveyor Thomas Pierson in 1709. Pierson surveyed the land for a new road to connect the Chesapeake Bay and Philadelphia, which helped establish Newark as a key location along this route.

Throughout the 18th century, Newark continued to develop into a regional trading hub. In 1758, the settlement received an official charter and was renamed Newark. The town saw further growth following the Revolutionary War and into the 19th century with the expansion of commerce and transportation networks.

Today, the historic legacy of Newark's founding and early development can still be seen in well-preserved buildings and landmarks around town.
