Thornton is a home rule municipality located in Adams and Weld counties in the U.S. state of Colorado. Thornton is located in the Denver-Aurora combined statistical area. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 140,972 residents, making it the sixth most populous municipality in the state of Colorado. Thornton is currently the 112th most populous city in the United States.

History

Thornton was founded in 1953 by Sam Hoffman. He purchased a farm about fourteen miles north of downtown Denver and developed it into a growing community. The town was named after Former Colorado Governor Dan Thornton. The Governor was a good friend of Mr. Hoffman.

Thornton is located at 39.9° N 105.1° W. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 31.0 square miles, of which 30.8 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles is water. The city sits at an elevation of 5,100 feet above sea level.

Thornton has a semi-arid climate with hot summers and mild, dry winters. The city receives approximately 18 inches of precipitation per year. Summers in Thornton are warm with temperatures frequently exceeding 90°F. Winters are mild with average temperatures around 40°F.

Demographics

As of the 2020 United States Census, Thornton had a population of 140,972 residents. The racial makeup of the city was 68.1% White, 4.8% African American, 1.3% Native American, 5.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 15.8% from other races, and 4.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino residents of any race made up 34.2% of the population.

There were 46,722 households, out of which 35.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 54.6% were married couples living together, 10.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.1% were non-families. 22.5% of all households were made up of individuals.
