Littleton is a home rule municipality located in Arapahoe, Douglas, and Jefferson counties in the U.S. state of Colorado. According to 2019 census estimates, the population of Littleton was 47,734, making it the 15th most populous municipality in Colorado and the 212th most populous city in the United States.

History

Littleton was founded in 1859 by Richard Sullivan Little, an engineer who came to the area during the Pike's Peak Gold Rush. He planned a county seat and founded the town of Littleton in present-day Arapahoe County. Little saw opportunity along the South Platte River and envisioned a grand city where Denver now sits, with Littleton as its hub. In its early years, Littleton held the offices of government and was the Arapahoe county seat from 1859 until 1902 when the courthouse was moved to Denver.
