With a population of over 100,000 residents, Greeley is the 13th largest city in Colorado and the county seat of Weld County. Known as the "City of Trees and Innovation," Greeley has a rich history and offers many attractions and amenities for residents and visitors.

History

Greeley was founded in 1870 by Nathan Meeker, a reporter from New York. Meeker established the Union Colony as an experimental utopian community. The city was named after Horace Greeley, founder of the New York Tribune, who was Meeker's former employer.

The city's early economy was driven by agriculture and developed as a major regional farming community. Sugar beets became a major crop, and Greeley was home to one of the first sugar beet processing factories. Agriculture and agribusiness remains important to the local economy today.

Education was also a key part of Greeley's early development. Colorado's University of Northern Colorado was founded here in 1889 as the State Normal School to train teachers. Greeley is often quoted as saying "Go West, young man, and grow up with the country." This pioneering spirit is still evident throughout the community today.
