Grand Junction is a city located in Mesa County in western Colorado, United States. According to the 2020 census, the population of Grand Junction is 62,848, making it the 15th most populous city in Colorado. Grand Junction serves as a commercial and transportation hub for the area.

History

The area was originally inhabited by the Ute people. White settlers began arriving in the area in the late 19th century. The town of Grand Junction was established in 1882 with the arrival of the railroad. The name "Grand Junction" comes from the city's location at the confluence of the Colorado and Gunnison rivers. Grand Junction quickly became an important railroad town and agricultural center. The discovery of large coal deposits nearby helped drive the local economy in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The establishment of Colorado National Monument just west of town in 1911 was another key event in Grand Junction's early history. Today, Grand Junction continues to be an important center for transportation, agriculture, energy production, and tourism in western Colorado.

Colorado National Monument

Colorado National Monument is a National Park Service unit located just west of Grand Junction. This beautiful park features colorful canyons carved by the Colorado River and its tributaries. Some of the notable features of the monument include Independence Monument, Coke Ovens Trail, the Devil's Kitchen Trail, and the 23-mile Rim Rock Drive with its scenic overlooks. Museum of Western Colorado

The Museum of Western Colorado is located downtown in Grand Junction and features exhibits on the cultural history and paleontology of western Colorado. Grand Mesa

The Grand Mesa is a large mesa located just southeast of Grand Junction, towering about 6,000 feet above the valley floor. It is the largest flat-topped mountain in the world. The mesa provides scenic vistas and recreational activities like hiking, fishing, camping, and mountain biking. There are over 200 small lakes dotted across the top of the mesa.

Transportation

Grand Junction is served by the Grand Junction Regional Airport, located approximately 5 miles from downtown. The airport offers daily nonstop flights to Denver, Phoenix, Dallas, and other major airports. Grand Junction is also an important railroad junction, located on the Union Pacific Railroad line. Amtrak's California Zephyr train stops daily at the Grand Junction Station.

Grand Junction also has an extensive bus system, the Grand Valley Transit, serving the city and surrounding area. The local bus system has twelve routes throughout the city.
