Centennial is a city located in Arapahoe County in the U.S. state of Colorado. According to the 2020 census, Centennial has a population of 112,297 residents, making it the 15th most populous municipality in Colorado. Centennial is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood metropolitan area.

History

Centennial was incorporated on February 7, 2001. The city was named "Centennial" to honor Colorado's admission to the Union as the 38th state in 1876, the centennial year of the United States Declaration of Independence. Prior to incorporation, the area had been known as Willow Creek, Arapahoe County, unincorporated Arapahoe County, and Greenwood Village South.

The history of Centennial can be traced back to the 1850s when the first log cabin was built in what is now called Centennial. At that time, trappers and traders frequented the area. By the late 19th century, settlers established homesteads on the land that would eventually become Centennial. Farming, ranching and coal mining drove the early economy.

In the 1950s, the area began to suburbanize as Denver grew. Residential and commercial development accelerated in the 1970s and 1980s as Interstate 25 and Interstate 225 facilitated transportation and urban sprawl. By the 1990s, Greenwood Village South contained over 60,000 residents and incorporation talks began. On November 8, 2000, residents voted to incorporate as the City of Centennial.
