Castle Rock is a home rule municipality that is the county seat of Douglas County, Colorado, United States. As of the 2020 US Census, the population of Castle Rock was 73,158. Castle Rock is located midway between Denver and Colorado Springs at 39.37°N 104.85°W. The town sits atop a prominent rock formation called Castle Rock, named after the castle-tower shaped butte near the center of town.

History

Castle Rock was founded in 1874 when the area that is now the town of Castle Rock was home to stagecoach and railroad stops. By the late 1800s, Castle Rock earned its name due to two prominent castle tower-shaped buttes that sat above the town. Castle Rock served as county seat and center of trade for the Douglas County area. In 1874, a county election for the Douglas County seat resulted in Castle Rock winning, but not without controversy and dispute. As of the 2020 US Census, Castle Rock had a population of 73,158 people. The racial makeup of Castle Rock is 83.7% White, 2.5% African American, 0.4% Native American, 7.7% Asian, 0% Pacific Islander, 2.1% from other races, and 3.5% from two or more races. 10.3% of the population is Hispanic or Latino of any race.
