History

The name Yucaipa comes from the Tongva language word "Yucaipat" meaning "wet lands." The area was originally home to the Serrano people for centuries. In the early 1800s, the land was acquired by the San Gabriel Mission. After California gained statehood in 1850, the land that is now Yucaipa was acquired by migrants from the southern United States, especially North Carolina.
