History

The area where Yorba Linda sits today was originally part of the lands of the Tongva Native American tribe. Spanish colonists later claimed the area for Spain. The first European to pass through the area was Gaspar de Portolà in 1769 as part of an expedition to find sites for Catholic missions. In 1834, Jose Antonio Yorba was granted the 13,328-acre (53.96 km2) Rancho Cañón de Santa Ana by the Mexican government. This rancho included the lands that make up present-day Yorba Linda and portions of Anaheim.

After California was ceded to the United States in 1848, at the end of the Mexican-American War, the land was sold to Jacob Stern and other American settlers. The area remained largely agricultural and cattle grazing lands until the 1950s when housing subdivisions were constructed and the city began to grow into a bedroom community. Yorba Linda was incorporated as an independent city in 1967.
