History of Wildomar

The history of Wildomar dates back to the late 19th century when settlers first came to the area. The town was established in 1886 by Cornelius Jensen and James Harvey. The name Wildomar comes from the names of Jensen's wife, Ida Wilcox, and James Harvey's wife, Martha Graham.

Wildomar grew as a farming and ranching community in the early 20th century. The town was also a stopping point on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad. Wildomar incorporated as a city in 2008 after efforts by residents to gain more local control.

Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve

The Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve (39400 Clinton Keith Rd, Murrieta, CA 92562) is an 8,300 acre preserve that protects rare and endangered plants and animals.

The reserve has several hiking trails that wind through oak woodlands, chaparral, and grasslands. Visitors may spot coyotes, bobcats, deer, and over 200 species of birds.

Rare species at the reserve include the Engelmann oak, coastal California gnatcatcher, least Bell's vireo, and thread-leaved brodiaea.
