West Hollywood, commonly referred to as WeHo, is a city in Los Angeles County, California. With a population of 37,213 as of 2022 according to the United States Census Bureau, it is one of the most densely populated cities in the county.

History

The area that is now West Hollywood was once home to the Gabrielino/Tongva people for thousands of years. Spain claimed the land that would become California after the 1542 voyage of Juan Cabrillo. In 1769, Europeans first entered the region with the establishment of Mission San Gabriel Arcángel by Spaniards. The area eventually became part of Mexico after its independence from Spain in 1822. In 1848, the westward expansion of the United States brought California into the union.

The city of West Hollywood was incorporated on November 29, 1984 after a campaign for cityhood led by gay activist groups and residents. It became one of the first majority openly LGBT municipalities in the nation.
