Spanish explorers began traveling through Walnut Creek in the late 1700s. In 1834, the Mexican government granted much of the land that now makes up Walnut Creek to Juana Sanchez de Pacheco as the Rancho Arroyo de Las Nueces y Bolbones Mexican land grant.

American settlers started arriving in the 1850s after California became part of the United States. By the 1860s, Walnut Creek began to grow when farmers from nearby Concord and Pacheco began to move in. In 1864, the town's first post office opened and it was officially named Walnut Creek.
