History

The earliest residents of the Union City area were the Ohlone Native Americans. In 1797, the land that is now Union City was part of the Rancho Los Meganos Mexican land grant given to Jose Joaquin Estudillo by the Spanish crown. American settlement in the area grew rapidly after California became part of the United States in 1850.

Union City itself was founded in 1959 with the merging of the communities of Alvarado and Decoto. Alvarado was a railroad town along the original transcontinental railroad route connecting San Jose and Oakland. Decoto grew with the construction of the Oakland-San Jose railroad right-of-way. On January 13, 1959, the two communities voted to incorporate into a single city called Union City.
