The area was originally inhabited by the Tongva people. The first Europeans arrived in 1769 with the Portola Expedition. In 1837, the area became part of Rancho San Juan Cajón de Santa Ana. The city was incorporated in 1927 and was named after Columbus Tustin, who was the manager of the Rancho.
