History

Stockton was founded by Captain Charles Maria Weber in 1849 after he acquired Rancho Campo de los Franceses. The city was named after Commodore Robert F. Stockton. It was the first community in California to have a name that was neither Spanish nor Native American in origin. Stockton developed as an agricultural hub and became an important transportation center due to its location within California's fertile Central Valley.

During the California Gold Rush, the San Joaquin River was navigable by ocean-going vessels, making Stockton a natural inland seaport. It served as the first state capital for a brief period from 1849-1851 before Sacramento became the permanent capital. Stockton continued to thrive as an agricultural center and transportation hub throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was home to the world's first long-distance telephone call in 1876.
