The area that is now Simi Valley was once inhabited by the Chumash Native Americans. In 1795, the Spanish established the Mission San Buenaventura in what is now Ventura, bringing European settlers to the region. Rancho Simi, a Spanish land concession, was established in the early 19th century and included most of modern-day Simi Valley.

In the late 19th century, the town of Simi began to form around a stagecoach stop. The city was incorporated in 1969 and continued to grow rapidly throughout the late 20th century.
