History of Seaside

The area was originally inhabited by the Costanoan Rumsen tribe prior to Spanish colonization. Seaside's modern founding dates back to 1887 when Dr. J.L.D. Roberts purchased land with the intent of turning the coastal prairie into a vacation resort town. Early industries revolved around floral cultivation and tourism. Hotels, restaurants, and other businesses were built to serve visitors to the Monterey Bay region. In the early 1900s, other attractions were added, such as an amusement park, dance hall, and baseball field.

During the 20th century, Fort Ord opened south of Seaside in 1917, establishing the city as a military town. Many veterans settled in Seaside after retiring from service. The base closure in 1994 led to economic changes. Seaside is now transitioning to a more diverse, tourism-focused economy while maintaining its small town charm.
