Santa Maria is a city located in Santa Barbara County on the Central Coast of California. As of the 2020 census, the population of Santa Maria was 108,470, making it the most populous city in the county.

History

Santa Maria was founded in 1874 by the Pacific Coast Railway which was building a line from San Luis Obispo to Guadalupe. The town was originally named Grangerville after early settler William Granger. In 1885, the name was officially changed to Santa Maria.

One of the key aspects of Santa Maria's early history was the railroad which brought homesteaders to the area. Farming and ranching quickly became mainstays of the local economy. In the early 1900s, oil exploration and drilling also began in the region.

Santa Maria Valley Discovery Museum

The Santa Maria Valley Discovery Museum is located at 705 S McClelland St, Santa Maria. This museum covers the art, history and culture of the Santa Maria Valley. Some of the key exhibits explore the valley's natural environment and Chumash Native American history.

The Discovery Museum is open Wednesday-Sunday from 10am-4pm. Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for seniors over 65, $4 for children ages 6-17 and free for children under 6.

Santa Maria Regional History Museum

Another local history museum is the Santa Maria Regional History Museum located downtown at 614 South Broadway, Santa Maria. This museum includes exhibits on the founding of Santa Maria, the railroad, agriculture, and more.

The Regional History Museum is open Wednesday-Sunday 12pm-5pm. Admission is free.

Waller Park

Transportation

The major highways serving Santa Maria are US Route 101 which runs through the city as well as State Route 135 and State Route 1. Santa Maria is serviced by the Santa Maria Public Airport for regional air travel. The nearest international airport is Santa Barbara Airport about 40 miles away.

Public education in Santa Maria is provided by the Santa Maria-Bonita School District which covers elementary, middle and high schools. There are 17 elementary schools, 4 junior high schools and 3 high schools in the district serving over 16,000 students.

Santa Maria is also home to Allan Hancock College, a California public community college enrolling around 11,000 students. The college offers associate's degrees, certificate programs, career training and transfer programs to four-year universities.
