History

The city has a rich history dating back centuries. The area was originally inhabited by the Tataviam people for over 2,000 years. In 1769, the Spanish Portola expedition arrived and established the area as part of the Spanish empire. Mission San Fernando Rey de Espana was founded in 1797, bringing more Spanish settlers to the region. In 1842, the area became part of Mexico after winning independence from Spain. Following the Mexican-American War, California became part of the United States in 1848. The California Gold Rush brought many people West, some settling in the Santa Clarita Valley. The area remained fairly isolated until the late 1800s when railways were built linking to Los Angeles and the rest of the country. Significant growth came after World War II with the post-war boom. Ranches and rural areas quickly transformed into suburbs. On December 15, 1987, four unincorporated communities (Canyon Country, Newhall, Saugus, and Valencia) merged to create the city of Santa Clarita. The city incorporated in December 1987.
