The Presidio of Santa Barbara and Mission Santa Barbara were established in 1782 by the Spanish, making it the 10th of 21 California missions founded by the Spanish.

Santa Barbara was captured by the Mexican army led by Jose Maria Flores in 1846 during the Mexican-American War. It was recaptured the next year by American forces under John C. Fremont. After California became a state in 1850, Santa Barbara grew and diversified its economy beyond trade and agriculture.

Significant events in the city's modern history include a major earthquake in 1925 that destroyed much of downtown, and another large earthquake in 1978. Fires in 1964 and 1990 also impacted the region. Tourism has been an important industry for many decades.

In addition to buses, the Electric Shuttle runs three loop routes around downtown Santa Barbara free of charge.
