History of San Rafael

San Rafael has a long and storied history. The first Europeans to arrive in the area were members of the Spanish Portola expedition in 1769. They gave the name San Rafael Arcángel to the mission site in honor of the Archangel Raphael. In 1817, the Mission San Rafael Arcángel was established, becoming the 20th Spanish mission in California.

After Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821, the mission lands were secularized and most of the Aboriginal population of the area declined drastically. The Mexican government carved the land into large land grants, and American settlers started arriving in the 1830s. San Rafael itself was founded in 1849 by John Reed and laid out in the traditional Spanish colonial grid pattern.

San Rafael grew quickly in the late 19th century, largely fueled by the development of the railways and the construction of the San Quentin Prison. The city was incorporated in 1874 and continued growing into a regional commercial center. In the 20th century, San Rafael became known as a haven for arts, with a vibrant cultural scene. The 1970s saw a population boom as San Francisco commuters moved north.
