History

San Mateo's history dates back to the earliest days of Spanish exploration and settlement in California. The City of San Mateo's website notes that the Spanish first explored the San Francisco Peninsula in the late 1700s, eventually establishing a presence in what would become San Mateo County. In 1789, the Spanish constructed the Mission San Francisco de Asís (Mission Dolores) nearby in modern day San Francisco, which brought more activity to the region.

The City of San Mateo itself was not incorporated until 1894, relatively late compared to many other Bay Area cities. The name "San Mateo" can be translated to "Saint Matthew" and was chosen due to the proximity to San Mateo Creek. The railroad helped drive much of the early growth in San Mateo. Through the early 20th century, the city became known as a pleasant suburban residential area for professionals working in San Francisco. Many of the city's neighborhoods with characteristic architecture and landscaping date from this time period.
