History

San Leandro has a rich history dating back to the early 19th century. It was originally inhabited by the Muwekma Ohlone people for thousands of years. Spanish settlers first arrived in the area in the late 1700s and established ranches and farms.

The city itself was founded in 1856 by William Heath Davis who purchased Rancho San Leandro and laid out the town site. Early development was spurred by the arrival of the railroad in 1869. San Leandro was incorporated as a city in 1872 and grew rapidly as an agricultural community known for its cherries, strawberries and tomatoes.

In the early 20th century, industry began to develop in San Leandro with automotive manufacturing playing a major role. The city saw further growth following World War II as suburban neighborhoods expanded. While industry has declined in recent decades, San Leandro continues to thrive as a residential suburb of Oakland and San Francisco.
