History

San Juan Capistrano has a long and rich history dating back to its founding in 1776 by Spanish Catholics of the Franciscan Order. The mission was named after Giovanni de Capistrano, a 15th century theologian and "warrior priest" who led a crusade against the Ottoman Empire. The mission quickly became an important site for spreading Christianity among indigenous tribes and expanding Spanish territory.

Every March, the famous swallows migrate back to the area from their winter nesting grounds in Argentina. Their yearly return is celebrated during the annual Swallows Day Parade.
