San Clemente is a city located in southern Orange County, California. With a population of 63,522 as of the 2010 census, it is one of the larger cities in the county.

Population and Geography

According to the latest census data, San Clemente has a population of 64,597 residents. The city has a total area of 19.5 square miles, consisting almost entirely of land with little water area.

History of San Clemente

Native American tribes including the Juaneño and Luiseño originally inhabited the area where San Clemente now stands. Spanish explorers arrived in the late 1700s, followed by Mission San Juan Capistrano being established nearby in 1776.

In 1925, real estate developer Ole Hanson purchased the area to build a planned coastal community. Hanson named the city after San Clemente Island, itself named after St. Clement. San Clemente officially incorporated as a city in 1928.
