Some key facts about San Bruno:

History of San Bruno

The area of San Bruno was originally inhabited by the Ramaytush tribe of the Ohlone Native Americans. The Ramaytush had villages located in the San Francisco peninsula near San Bruno Creek.

In 1775, the Spanish arrived and established the San Francisco Presidio and Mission San Francisco de Asís (Mission Dolores). The establishment of the missions had a devastating impact on the native Ohlone population.

In 1835, the Mexican government secularized the missions and granted their lands to prominent families. Rancho Buri Buri, a 14,639-acre ranch spanning parts of modern day San Bruno, Millbrae, Burlingame, and San Francisco International Airport, was granted to General José Antonio Sanchez.

In 1853, Denis J. Oliver bought parcels of Rancho Buri Buri land and named his property San Bruno Rancho. In 1866, Denis Oliver sold 700 acres of his land to Judge Samuel M. Mezes who built a school and gave away free lots to attract people to the area. Mezes helped create the community of San Bruno in 1870.

The town continued to grow with the construction of rail transportation like the San Francisco and San Jose Railroad. In the early 20th century, San Bruno expanded with the growth of Tanforan Racetrack and later on with the establishment of San Francisco International Airport.
