History

The Salinas Valley had long been home to the indigenous Esselen people when Spanish colonization began in the late 1700s. The city itself was founded in 1874 and incorporated in 1903. It was a hub for cattle ranching in its early days. After the arrival of the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1872, Salinas emerged as a center for agricultural processing and shipping. Over time, row crop farming and vegetable production came to dominate the local economy.
