Sacramento is the capital city of the U.S. state of California and the seat and largest city of Sacramento County. Located at the confluence of the Sacramento and American Rivers in Northern California's Sacramento Valley, Sacramento's estimated population as of 2021 was 524,943, making it the sixth-largest city in California and the 36th largest city in the United States.

History

Sacramento was founded in 1848 by John Sutter. He named the new settlement after the Sacramento River, which forms its western border. In 1849, after gold was discovered in the region, Sacramento became a boom town luring in migrants making their way to the gold fields of the Sierra Nevada foothills. Sacramento was officially incorporated as a city on February 27, 1850. It served as the capital of California from 1854 until 1879 when the capital was moved to San Francisco, and then moved back to Sacramento in 1880 where it has remained ever since.

Sacramento covers about 99.2 square miles near the north end of California's expansive Central Valley, about 90 miles northeast of San Francisco and 45 miles south of the California state capital of Sacramento. Sacramento is the core cultural and economic center of the Sacramento metropolitan area which had an estimated population of 2,375,380 as of 2021.

As of 2021, Sacramento had an estimated population of 524,943 making it the 6th most populous city in California. The racial and ethnic composition of the population was 46.1% White, 15.3% Asian, 13.5% African American, 13.2% from some other race, 5.2% from two or more races, 4.4% Native American, and 2.3% Pacific Islander.
