History of Rohnert Park

Rohnert Park was first settled by the Coast Miwok Native American tribe. In 1836, German settlers established Rancho Cotati on the land that would later become Rohnert Park. The ranch was purchased in 1899 by the directors of the Sonoma State Home, who envisioned building a town called "Rohnert Park" as a commercial center for local farmers. Development was delayed by World War II but began in earnest in the 1950s under designer Frank Rohnert. Rohnert Park was officially incorporated as a city in 1962.
