Redwood City's history dates back to the Ohlone indigenous people who originally inhabited the San Francisco Peninsula. In 1776, the Spanish set up a mission and presidio in San Francisco and began exploring the Peninsula. The Rancho de las Pulgas land grant was made in 1795 and covered much of modern day Redwood City. The city was officially incorporated in 1867. Early industries included logging redwood trees, shipbuilding, and commercial salt production from evaporated bay waters. The county seat was moved from San Mateo to Redwood City in 1856.
