History

The area where Redlands sits today was originally inhabited by the Serrano Native Americans. The first Europeans to explore the region were Spanish missionaries and soldiers in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

The city was officially founded in 1881 by Frank E. Brown, a civil engineer from New York. He designed the city's original street grid and named it Redlands after the reddish color of the soil. Citrus fruits were among the first crops cultivated in Redlands, as the climate and soil were ideal for growing oranges, lemons and grapefruits. By 1890, Redlands was considered the "Orange Growing Center of Southern California."

The arrival of the railroad in 1888 contributed greatly to the growth and economic prosperity of Redlands in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The city became an agricultural hub and tourist destination, with many grand Victorian homes built during this period.
