History

The area now known as Rancho Cucamonga was originally inhabited by Native American tribes including the Tongva, Serrano, and Kitanemuk tribes. In the early 19th century, the land belonged to a Mexican land grant known as Rancho San Bernardino. In 1877, the rancho lands were divided and the area that became Rancho Cucamonga was granted to Tubercio Tapia. The first Anglo settlers established Cucamonga as an agricultural community growing grapes, olives and citrus fruits. Throughout the 20th century, the area transitioned to a suburban bedroom community. Rancho Cucamonga was officially incorporated as a city in 1977.
