Porterville was founded by William Madison Worthington in 1852. Worthington established a store along the Tule River and named the settlement Portersville after his partner Andrew Porter. In 1856 the town was renamed to Porterville and it was officially incorporated in 1902.

The city experienced growth in the late 19th century as it became an agricultural hub and railroad connection point. Citrus production thrived in the early 20th century and became a defining industry for Porterville. The city continued to expand in population and economic diversity in the decades that followed.
