History

Pleasant Hill was incorporated in 1961. The area was originally home to the indigenous Bay Miwok people for thousands of years before Spanish, Mexican and American settlers arrived in the 19th century. In the late 1860s, a railroad stop called Pleasant Hill Station was built, attracting development to the area. Agriculture, particularly fruit orchards, dominated the local economy for decades until suburban residential development took off in the 1950s and 1960s.

The racial makeup is 65.3% White, 7.8% Asian, 4.6% Black, 0.8% Native American, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 15.2% from other races, and 6.1% from two or more races. 24.4% of the population is Hispanic or Latino of any race.
