History

The land that is now Pico Rivera was originally inhabited by the Tongva people. The first Europeans to arrive were soldiers from the Portola expedition in 1769. In 1834, the land was part of the Rancho Paso de Bartolo which included present day Whittier and Montebello. After changing ownership a few times, the rancho was dissolved and the land was sold off in pieces in 1858.

The city was founded in 1958 when ranchland and farmland was incorporated into a residential community. The city was named after the Pico family, who were early settlers and owned much of the land. Some of the city's early home developments include Oakford Park, Edinburgh Square and Roehm's Park.
